Psychology Of Music

According to Richard Parncutt, Professor of Systematic Musicology at the University of Graz, music psychology investigates why humans spend so much time, effort and money on musical activities; and it does this by combining the academic study of music (musicology) with the academic study of human individuals (psychology). Areas of psychology frequently drawn upon within the psychology of music include, biopsychology, perception, cognition, creativity, motivation and emotion.

The modern, international field of music psychology is gradually exploring a multitude of issues that surround the question of why humans spend enormous amounts of time, effort, and money on musical activities. Music psychology may be regarded as scientific research about human culture. The results of this research have, and will continue to have, direct implications for matters of general concern: human values, human identity, human nature, and quality of life.

Psychology of Music publishes peer reviewed papers directed at increasing the scientific understanding of any psychological aspect of music. These include studies on listening, performing, creating, memorising, analysing, describing, learning, and teaching, as well as applied social, developmental, attitudinal and therapeutic studies

Music psychology, or the psychology of music, may be regarded as a branch of psychology, a branch of musicology or as a field integrating with clinical music therapy. It aims to explain and understand musical behavior and musical experience. Modern music psychology is mainly empirical: music-psychological knowledge tends to advance primarily on the basis of interpretations of data about musical behavior and experience, which are collected by systematic observation of and interaction with human participants.

Music psychology can shed light on non-psychological aspects of musicology and musical practice. For example, music psychology contributes to music theory by investigating the perception of musical structures such as melody, harmony, tonality, rhythm, meter, and form. Research in music history can benefit from psychologically inspired, systematic study of the history of musical syntax, or from psychological analyses of the personalities of composers in relation to the psychological effect of their music.

Bill Gates And His Words Of Wisdom

The Journey Thus Far

"It's pretty amazing to go from a world where computers were unheard of and very complex to where they're a tool of everyday life. That was the dream that I wanted to make come true, and in a large part it's unfolded as I'd expected. You can argue about advertising business models or which networking protocol would catch on or which screen sizes would be used for which things. There are less robots now than I would have guessed."

[Rolling Stone, March 13, 2014]

Why Microsoft Succeeded?

"Most of our competitors were one-product wonders ... They would do their one product, but never get their engineering sorted out.

"They did not think about software in this broad way. They did not think about tools or efficiency. They would therefore do one product, but would not renew it to get it to the next generation."

[BBC, June 19, 2008]

Collaborating With Apple Early On

"We had really bet our future on the Macintosh being successful, and then, hopefully, graphics interfaces in general being successful, but first and foremost, the thing that would popularize that being the Macintosh.

"So we were working together. The schedules were uncertain. The quality was uncertain. The price. When Steve first came up, it was going to be a lot cheaper computer than it ended up being, but that was fine."

[AllThingsD, May 31, 2007]

Working With Steve Jobs

"Steve and I were very different. But we were both good at picking people. We were both hyperenergetic and worked superhard. We were close partners in doing the original Mac software, and that was an amazing thing, because we had more people working on it than Apple did. But we were very naive. Steve promised us this was going to be this $499 machine, and next thing we knew, it was $1,999. Anyway, the Mac project was an incredible experience."

[Rolling Stone, March 13, 2014]

Microsoft's Growth

"You know, even when we wrote down at Microsoft in 1975, 'a computer on every desk and in every home,' we didn't realize, oh, we’ll have to be a big company. Every time, I thought, 'Oh, God, can we double in size?'"

[AllThingsD, May 31, 2007]

Enjoying The Less World Changing Stuff

"Playing Bridge is a pretty old fashioned thing in a way that I really like ... I do the dishes every night - other people volunteer but I like the way I do it."

[Reddit, February 10, 2014]

Success

"Success is a lousy teacher. It seduces smart people into thinking they can't lose."

[The Road Ahead, 1995]

His Guilty Pleasure

"Owning a plane is a guilty pleasure. Warren Buffett called his the Indefensible. I do get to a lot of places for Foundation work I wouldn't be able to go to without it."

[Reddit, February 10, 2014]

The Role Of Technology

"Fine, go to those Bangalore Infosys centers, but just for the hell of it go three miles aside and go look at the guy living with no toilet, no running water ... The world is not flat and PCs are not, in the hierarchy of human needs, in the first five rungs."

[The Financial Times, November 1, 2013]

Why He Wants To Eradicate Diseases?

"Eradications are special ... Zero is a magic number. You either do what it takes to get to zero and you're glad you did it; or you get close, give up and it goes back to where it was before, in which case you wasted all that credibility, activity, money that could have been applied to other things."

[The Financial Times, November 1, 2013]

The Role Of Money

"I'm certainly well taken care of in terms of food and clothes ... Money has no utility to me beyond a certain point. Its utility is entirely in building an organization and getting the resources out to the poorest in the world."

[The Telegraph UK, January 18, 2013]

His Life's Work

"The most important work I got a chance to be involved in, no matter what I do, is the personal computer. You know, that’s what I grew up, in my teens, my 20s, my 30s, you know, I even knew not to get married until later because I was so obsessed with it. That’s my life’s work."

[AllThingsD, May 31, 2007]

Government

"You have to have a certain realism that government is a pretty blunt instrument and without the constant attention of highly qualified people with the right metrics, it will fall into not doing things very well."

[Rolling Stone, March 13, 2014]

Development Versus Venture Capital

"You know, development sometimes is viewed as a project in which you give people things and nothing much happens, which is perfectly valid, but if you just focus on that, then you'd also have to say that venture capital is pretty stupid, too. Its hit rate is pathetic. But occasionally, you get successes, you fund a Google or something, and suddenly venture capital is vaunted as the most amazing field of all time. Our hit rate in development is better than theirs, but we should strive to make it better."

[Rolling Stone, March 13, 2014]

The Value Of Unhappy Customers

"Your most unhappy customers are your greatest source of learning."

[Forbes, March 4, 2014]

Competition

"Microsoft has had clear competitors in the past. It’s a good thing we have museums to document that."

[Infoworld, October 1, 2004]

His Place In The Universe

"It's possible, you can never know, that the universe exists only for me. If so, it's sure going well for me, I must admit."

[TIME, January 13, 1997]

Intellectual Property

"Intellectual property has the shelf life of a banana."

[Seattle Post Intelligencer, July 7, 2011]

Being In Business

"Of my mental cycles, I devote maybe 10% to business thinking. Business isn't that complicated. I wouldn't want to put it on my business card."

[Playboy, July 1994]

The Limits Of Capitalism

"The market does not drive the scientists, the communicators, the thinkers, the government to do the right things.  And only by paying attention to these things, and having brilliant people who care and draw other people in, can we make as much progress as we need to."

[TED Talk, February 2009]

The Importance Of Innovation

"Our modern lifestyle is not a political creation. Before 1700, everybody was poor as hell. Life was short and brutish. It wasn't because we didn't have good politicians; we had some really good politicians. But then we started inventing — electricity, steam engines, microprocessors, understanding genetics and medicine and things like that. Yes, stability and education are important — I'm not taking anything away from that — but innovation is the real driver of progress."

Albert Einstein And His Words Of Wisdom

Authority

"Unthinking respect for authority is the greatest enemy of truth."

["The Curious History of Relativity"]

Scope

"Nature shows us only the tail of the lion. But there is no doubt in my mind that the lion belongs with it even if he cannot reveal himself to the eye all at once because of his huge dimension."

 [Smithsonian, February 1979]

Politics

"I am by heritage a Jew, by citizenship a Swiss, and by makeup a human being, and only a human being, without any special attachment to any state or national entity whatsoever."

["The Yale Book of Quotations"]

Certainty

"As far as the laws of mathematics refer to reality, they are not certain; and as far as they are certain, they do not refer to reality."

[Address to Prussian Academy of Science, January 1921]

Humility

"As a human being, one has been endowed with just enough intelligence to be able to see clearly how utterly inadequate that intelligence is when confronted with what exists."

[Letter to Queen Elisabeth of Belgium, September 1932]

His Growth

"It is true that my parents were worried because I began to speak fairly late, so that they even consulted a doctor. I can't say how old I was — but surely not less than three."
[Letter, 1954]

Common Sense

"Common sense is nothing more than a deposit of prejudices laid down in the mind before you reach eighteen."

["The Universe and Dr. Einstein"]

Success

"If A is a success in life, then A equals X plus Y plus Z. Work is X; Y is play; and Z is keeping your mouth shut."

["The Yale Book of Quotations"]

Nationalism

"Nationalism is an infantile sickness. It is the measles of the human race."

["Albert Einstein, the Human Side"]

Mystery

"The most beautiful experience we can have is the mysterious. It is the fundamental emotion that stands at the cradle of true art and true science. Whoever does not know it and can no longer wonder, no longer marvel, is as good as dead, and his eyes are dimmed."

["The World As I See It," 1930]

Solitude

"My passionate sense of social justice and social responsibility has always contrasted oddly with my pronounced lack of need for direct contact with other human beings and human communities. I am truly a 'lone traveler and have never belonged to my country, my home, my friends, or even my immediate family, with my whole heart; in the face of all these ties, I have never lost a sense of distance and a need for solitude ..."

["The World As I See It," 1930]

Self Presentation

“If I were to start taking care of my grooming, I would no longer be my own self ...”
[Letter, December 1913]

Motivation

"The ideals that have lighted my way, and time after time have given me new courage to face life cheerfully, have been Kindness, Beauty, and Truth. Without the sense of kinship with men of like mind, without the occupation with the objective world, the eternally unattainable in the field of art and scientific endeavors, life would have seemed empty to me. The trite objects of human efforts — possessions, outward success, luxury — have always seemed to me contemptible."

["The World As I See It," 1930]

Education

“The aim [of education] must be the training of independently acting and thinking individuals who, however, see in the service to the community their highest life problem.”

[Address, October 1936]

Inspiration

"Nothing truly valuable arises from ambition or from a mere sense of duty; it stems rather from love and devotion towards men and towards objective things."

[Letter, July 1947]

Learning

"Most teachers waste their time by asking questions that are intended to discover what a pupil does not know, whereas the true art of questioning is to discover what the pupil does know or is capable of knowing."

["Conversations with Albert Einstein," 1920]

Thinking

"I very rarely think in words at all. A thought comes, and I may try to express in words afterwards."

["Productive Thinking," 1959]

Curiosity

"The important thing is to not stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existing."

[Nova]

Work Ethic

"The state of mind which enables a man to do work of this kind ... is akin to that of the religious worshipper or the lover; the daily effort comes from no deliberate intention or program, but straight from the heart."

[Speech, 1918]

Childhood

"The ordinary adult never gives a thought to space-time problems ... I, on the contrary, developed so slowly that I did not begin to wonder about space and time until I was an adult. I then delved more deeply into the problem than any other adult or child would have done."

[Letter, 1956]

The Role Of Science

"One thing I have learned in a long life: that all our science, measured against reality, is primitive and childlike — and yet it is the most precious thing we have."

["Albert Einstein: Creator and Rebel," 1972]

The Hustle

"The only way to escape the corruptible effect of praise is to go on working."

[Smithsonian, February 1979]
